USS Iwo Jima docked at Pier 88 on Manhattan’s West Side for Fleet Week and was open to the visiting public for Fleet Week 2009.
Although it looks like an aircraft carrier, USS Iwo Jima is actually an amphibious assault ship, one of the eight Wasp class ships in service with the US Navy. The Wasp class is the largest of its type in service anywhere in the world.
USS Iwo Jima was launched 2001 and can carry up to 20 Harrier V/STOL aircraft, an Air Group of helicopters, one battalion-size Marine Expeditionary Unit complete with M1 Abrams Main Battle Tanks, 155mm Howitzers and still provide 600 hospital beds.
The ship’s commander is Captain Jeffrey Charles Amick.

A Memorial Day ceremony honoring veterans was held at the USS Intrepid Museum May 25 2009. Intrepid Museum President Bill White served as MC for the event which included a keynote address by Admiral Jonathan W. Greenert, Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, remarks by Governor David Patterson and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand followed by the traditional wreath laying, the playing of Taps, a 3-volley gun salute and the unfurling of a 100-foot American flag by veterans and Service members on the flight deck of USS Intrepid.
